Delhi behind attack on Lanka team: Durrani

On a day when Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani blamed Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for
the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers on March 3, former Pakistan national security advisor Mahmud Durrani
chose to point fingers at India.
In an exclusive interview to The Times of India, Durrani said, “There is an impression in Pakistan that what
happened in Lahore with the Sri Lankan team was the work of RAW, India is responsible. There is a strong
feeling but we haven’t gone wild about it.”
On Sunday, reports from Pakistan said its intelligence agencies were preparing a dossier linking RAW with the
terrorist attacks in Pakistan’s tribal areas, like Mohmand Agency.
Durrani was also clear that there was no case against the Jama’atud Da’awa chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed
that necessitated any prosecution of him.
“It is unfair for India to say we’ve given you what we could, now you go and hang that chap. We have to take him
to a court of law, and if he’s responsible, hang him. But only if he’s responsible. I have spoken to some of the
people involved in these investigations. They say we have no proof. I don’t think anything India has provided links

to what happened in Mumbai,” he added.
Durrani said the state of India-Pakistan relations was not “happy” at this point, and the only way out was for both
countries to “talk” to each other, particularly the two “security agencies”.
Delivering the inaugural R K Mishra Memorial Lecture on ‘India-Pakistan Relations: Bridging the Gap’,
organised by Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi on Saturday, Durrani stated that terrorism is the most
potent threat to both India and Pakistan, stressing the need for urgent expansion of the Joint Anti-Terrorism
Mechanism to include senior representatives of security and intelligence agencies.
He admitted that the Joint Anti-Terrorism Mechanism has failed to achieve much so far. He said that “there is a
serious catharsis between our intelligence agencies” and that there is much mutual suspicion and mistrust in the
security and intelligence agencies of both the countries.
