Little hope of breakthrough in Pak-India NY talks
By Sajjad Malik
ISLAMABAD: There is little hope of a breakthrough or the revival of the composite dialogue process between Pakistan and India, when the two countries’ foreign ministers meet on the sidelines of UN General Assembly session on September 27 in New York. Diplomatic sources said that they were not “optimistic” about the restart of the stalled dialogue, due to the alleged Indian “stubbornness” on the issue of Pakistan making concrete progress on prosecuting those involved in the Mumbai attacks. “India’s tough public posture is a problem for the overall atmosphere of peace, as we are struggling to bring the pieces of evidence together to put the alleged perpetrators on trial,” they said. Sources said by digging its heels on the issue of trial, India was creating problems for Pakistan, which had to assure the domestic audience that it was taking action against the terrorists in its own interests and not under foreign pressure. They said the revival of the peace process would help improve the bilateral situation, but India was not ready for it and has agreed to talks in New York just to deflect the impression that New Delhi was against diplomatic engagements. http://dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?pag...009_pg7_12 |
