KU activates Disaster Management Volunteer Corps
KARACHI: In order to provide relief to the flood victims in the country, the University of Karachi (KU) has activated its Disaster Management Volunteer Corps (DMVC).

In its first meeting, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi addressed the audience to motivate students and KU faculty members for helping their country fellows during this chaotic time.

A large number of students showed interest in volunteering for the DMVC.

On the occasion, Institute of Space and Planetary Astrophysics Director Prof Dr Jameel Kazmi gave a detailed briefing on the flood situation and the related death toll of 1,400 people so far, and the displacement of 14 million people.

Most of the people, who are affected by the devastating flood, belong to the lower income groups, he said, adding, it has been reported that more then one million cusecs of water has inundated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh.

He highlighted the fact that Karachi is at least 100 kilometres away from river Indus system and the flood cannot directly affect the metropolis.

In the next few days, the flood might hit Keti Bandar and Khairpur, he said.

Medical team leaves: A nineteen-member medical team left the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Base Faisal via C-130 for Sukkur on Wednesday.

The team will be deployed in Sukkur and the adjoining flood-affected areas for providing medical treatment to the victims.

KESC sets up camps: The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has launched a flood-relief campaign to be exclusively managed by the utility’s employees.

The KESC has set up five camps in the city and a bank account to receive relief supplies and monetary donations. Moreover, KESC Care Camps were being established in Sindh to provide assistance to thousands of individuals affected by the country’s worst-ever natural disaster. These camps will provide medical treatment, food, shelter, safe drinking water and other basic necessities to the flood victims.

The KESC has urged citizens to deposit their donations at its camps. Monetary donations can be deposited in account no. 01-1251317-02 maintained at Standard Chartered Bank titled ‘KESC flood relief’. All branches of the bank have been authorised to collect donations.

KBCA donates: The Karachi Building Control Authority (KBCA) has announced a sum of Rs 5 million for the government’s flood relief fund.

A statement issued on Wednesday said that KBCA officers had donated their salary of five days, while other employees contributed a day’s salary to make the contribution.
