CDA serves notice on PTV to pay Rs29m tax
ISLAMABAD: Following rejection of the state-run television’s appeal against the decision of Lahore High Court by the Supreme Court, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) served a legal notice on the PTV to pay Rs29 million under the head of property tax.
Director Revenue CDA Malik Muhammad Iqbal told this scribe that the Authority had served a legal notice on the PTV to pay property tax but it filed a petition against the same in the Lahore High Court. It had taken the plea that being a government entity, no property tax could be levied on the organisation. However, the CDA took the plea that semi-government and independent organisations were brought under the tax net in 1995 and hence the PTV was bound to pay the tax. The LHC decided the case in favour of the CDA but the state-run television filed an appeal before the Supreme Court against the decision. The court granted leave to appeal but directed the PTV to pay the taxes. After paying an amount of Rs20 million in three instalments, the corporation stopped further payment. The CDA then filed a contempt plea before the court. The court dismissed the PTV appeal on April 7, 2011 following which a legal notice was served on the government-run TV channel to pay an outstanding tax of Rs29 millio |
