LHC rules wilful donation of organs acceptable
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has ruled the sale of human organs to be illegal, however, the wilful donation of organs has been declared acceptable. Justice Syed Shabbir Raza Rizvi made the ruling while directing the Mayo Hospital additional medical superintendent (AMS) to carry out a kidney transplant surgery. The petitioner, Himayat Ali, submitted that his cousin Ijazulhaq was being treated at the Mayo Hospital for the past four months and required a kidney transplant. Muhammad Riaz was willing to donate one of his kidneys to his cousin, and had acquired a No Objection Certificate from the Organ Transplantation Authority, he said, adding that the doctors had refused to perform the surgery. Himayat said that the unnecessary delay in the transplant could endanger his cousin’s life. Mayo Hospital AMS Dr Majeed appeared before the court and said the case was related to the Urology Department, and Dr Nawaz Chughtai was the head of that department. Justice Rizvi directed the AMS to convey the court’s directions to the responsible doctor and manage the kidney transplantation as soon as possible. staff report
