'Cost of Thar coal power plant estimated $3 billion'
KARACHI (January 25 2009): A Korean firm has estimated the development cost of a coal based mine, thermal power plant in Thar at $3 billion. A 9-member delegation of Bin Dean Korean group for coal mining revealed this during a meeting with Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah at Chief Minister House on Saturday. The Korean team briefed Qaim about the proposed project on development of coal and power plant.
The team proposed 1,200 MW capacity thermal power plant in Thar, and said that it would be developed and operated on build, own and operate (BOO) basis. The Chief Minister was informed that as per proposed details of the project the total investment was estimated up to $3 billion. The team also highlighted conventional modes, like Hydel electric power, thermal power and nuclear power and non-conventional methods, like solar power, wind power, tidel power and Bio-man power, systems of power generation. The delegates also proposed that the said project could contribute to the economy of Pakistan, particularly in the fields of education, employment, foreign investment etc. The meeting was also attended by Advisor to Chief Minister for Mines and Mineral Development Dr Khatu Mal Jeevan, Secretary Mines and Mineral Development Yonnis Dhaga and Secretary to CM Syed Sohail Akbar Shah.
