Islamabad: Zero Point Interchange project: CDA opens two loops to ease traffic flow

ISLAMABAD: Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Thursday opened two loops of the under-construction Zero Point Interchange (ZPI) for traffic to facilitate the motorists.

The first loop connects Islamabad Highway with Kashmir Highway (towards Peshawar Mor) and the second links Kashmir Highway from Peshawar Mor side to Faisal Avenue. CDA Chairman Imtiaz Inayat Elahi visited the site to view the progress on the project. CDA Member Engineering Abdul Jabbar Malano, Project Director Mumtaz Hussain and Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Dr Moeen Masood were present on this occasion.

CDA has opened two loops of Zero Point Interchange on the directives of CDA chairman, however, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani will formally inaugurate the project on CDA’s request, said a senior official of CDA.

Elahi directed the CDA member engineering and other officials concerned to take appropriate steps to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

He directed the officials to make an exit from Sector G-8 in the wake of increased traffic flow due to opening of the two loops of the interchange.

The member engineering told the CDA chairman that to deal with the situation a roundabout had been constructed at Service Road East at the junction of Sector G-8/3 and G-8/4 and opened for traffic. He said the existing entry point to Sector G-8 at ZTBL crossing had been closed and shifted about 200 meters ahead, where a new roundabout has been constructed.

This would not only provide enough space for free movement of traffic coming from Kashmir Highway onto Faisal Avenue but it would also help ease the traffic taking U-turn from Faisal Avenue to enter Sector G-8, said the member engineering.

Elahi advised the officials concerned for timely completion of the ZPI project so that the public may get the benefit as envisaged. The project would complete in two years.

The authorities had started its construction in September 2008 and it would be completed in September 2010. The design is in shape of cloverleaves. It includes four loops and four ramps with a length of 10 kilometers, he said.
