Another three flyovers in capital on the cards
ISLAMABAD: The cash-starved Capital Development Authority (CDA) is mulling to construct another three flyovers in different localities of the federal capital to reduce traffic congestion and ensure uninterrupted traffic flow. According to a senior CDA official, the residents had long been demanding the authority to construct a flyover and link roads on various intersections as the motorists have been facing tremendous difficulties to reach their destinations. “We are mulling the construction of a flyover linking Sector G-7 and Sector G-8. The project would address the long standing requirement of the commuters who had been denied direct access to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences after construction of Faisal Flyover,” said the official. He said the link was inevitable as the movement of ambulances between the Polyclinic Hospital and PIMS was being impeded by the flyover and the commuters used to drive through the whole sectors of G-8 or G-7 to reach the either hospital. Another flyover would be constructed on IJ Principal Road to reduce traffic rush on Stadium Road and 9th Avenue. Due to the financial constraints, the civic body would construct a flyover in first phase and later, an interchange would be constructed there. The third flyover has been planned on Karal Chowk to accommodate traffic plying from Islamabad Highway to Airport. At this point too, an interchange has been planned but initially a flyover would be constructed. As far as widening of Kashmir Highway is concerned, the design has been approved and the work and world would be initiated within a couple of months, after fulfilling all formalities. Besides, the CDA is going to renovate and rehabilitate existing streets of Rawal Town and tenders have been invited for the purpose. The civic body has invited tenders for the work costing Rs 4.62 million those would be opened on June 16, 2010. app
