Tax relief to industrial units challenged in SC
LAHORE: A full bench of the Supreme Court (SC) granted leave to appeal on appeals by an income tax commissioner, challenging the Lahore High Court (LHC) order of giving income tax relief to different industrial units. Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked that streamlining the system of revenue collection and easing tax collection through one-window operation could eliminate corruption. Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday remarked that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had an army of tax collectors but showed bleak performance and swallowed billions underhand. The income tax commissioner moved these appeals against various commercial units, which were granted relief in tax payment by the LHC. He claimed that the LHC order was defective as it was issued without issuing notice to the Income Tax Department.
