Pakistan wasting water

FAISALABAD - Pakistan wasted 105 million acre feet of rain and flood water into the Arabian Sea last year because of lack of water reservoirs and awareness among the people, the University of Agriculture Faisalabad vice chancellor said.
“The wasted water was manyfold more than the capacity of Tabela Dam, depicting a grim picture of the situation,” VC Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmed Khan added while addressing an inaugural ceremony of a project “Social Research to Foster Effective Collaboration and Strengthen Pro-Poor Values” at the varsity’s New Senate Hall. The ceremony was organised by the Department of Rural Sociology of the UAF in collaboration with the Agriculture Sector Linkage Programme (ASLP).
Australian Scientists Dr John Spriggs and Dr Santra H Muatafa were guests of honour on the occasion. Faculty of Rural Sociology and Agri Economics Dean Prof Dr Iqbal Zafar and Department of Rural Sociology Chairman Prof Dr Ashfaq Mann also addressed the participants.
Addressing the audience, the vice chancellor said the average milk production in Pakistan is very low that is only three-liter per animal in a day. However in Australia, he added, the people slaughtered the animal giving the said quantity of milk whereas Australian scientists have upgraded the breed of Pakistani Sahiwal Cow, obtaining highest ratio of milk from the said breed.
He stressed the need for increasing per animal milk production by adopting modern techniques that would result in generating heavy revenue for the county and ease the lives of farmers. Quoting an example of Australia, he said that people of the country prefer using the drinking water from taps because of awareness of saving water.
He called for getting befit from the experience of Australia adopting new technologies and transferring the knowledge into goods and services in a bid to boost up production that is prerequisite for the prosperity of Pakistan.
