Rawalpindi: Sniffer dogs to be used for detection of explosives
Shakeel Anjum
Sniffer dogs would be used at sensitive barriers in and around the city to counter the threats of suicide bombings.

Additional IG Nasir Khan Durrani has ordered the relevant department to arrange for sniffer dogs while chairing a crime meeting here on Monday.

City Police Officer Rao Muhammad Iqbal Khan gave a presentation on the state of crimes in the Rawalpindi district. He told participants of the meeting that 11,126 cases were registered during the year 2008 as compared to 11,512 cases in the corresponding period of the year 2007. It was also observed that during the month of September 2008 a crime wave prevailed in the Rawalpindi district due to Eid shopping.

Cases under pending investigation were also reviewed and it was found that the majority of police stations have finalised the long pending cases except for Cantonment, R A Bazaar and Airport police stations.

Security arrangements from terrorism point of view were also reviewed on the occasion.

Nasir Khan Durrani directed the concerned officials to use sniffer dogs for detection of explosive material. This task will be done with the assistance of the Special Branch, Rawalpindi. Instructions have been issued to all SDPOs and SSPs to review security arrangements.

SSP (Operation) Maqsood Khan, SP (Rawal Town) Khurram Shehzad, SP (Saddar Circle) Ahmad Hassan Chohan, SP (Investigation) Rana Shahid, DSP (Legal) Fida Hussain and all SDPOs of the Rawalpindi district attended the meeting.
