34,000 appointments to be made in Punjab schools this month

RAWALPINDI: Around 34,000 teachers and staff will be appointed in government schools throughout Punjab by the end of this month, said Nadeem Ashraf, secretary education Punjab, while addressing a prize distribution ceremony at Faizul Islam School here on Saturday.

Ashraf said the Punjab government had allocated Rs 10 billion in the provincial budget for the benefit of teachers and students. It was matter of great concern that annually 38 percent parents were not sending their children to schools, he added.

He said it was quite encouraging that students of Rawalpindi district had performed well in class 5th, 8th and secondary school certificate board exams. He said Rawalpindi district was on top in literacy rate in the province.

He directed the local education department to take action against the teachers who remained absent from duty without intimation. It was responsibility of the heads of educational institutions to make efforts to retake encroached lands of their schools from illegal occupants, the education secretary said.

Speaking on the occasion, Chaudhry Muhammad Yousaf, executive district officer (EDO), Education, regretted that teachers were always held responsible for evils in the society. Teachers, he added, worked with dedication and honesty to impart education to the next generation.

The EDO said majority of the students at government schools belonged to poor families. He said he wanted Rawalpindi to become number one district in education in the province. By the end of October a number of changes would be made in Rawalpindi schools, he added.

Later, the provincial education secretary distributed medals and shields among the students securing top positions class 5th, 8th and secondary school certificate board exams.

While talking to Daily Times, Chaudhry Yousaf said from Monday (tomorrow), beginning of new school year, they would start enrollment drive in the government schools.

He said it was his desire that maximum number of children were admitted in the government schools. He said he had directed the district education officers to enroll children of 5 years age and above.
