Scanner gates to be installed in Peshawar
A truck passes through a vehicle scanner newly installed by Pakistan's army at a road leading to Swat Valley.—AP PESHAWAR: NWFP Inspector General of Police Malik Naveed has said 35 scanner gates will be installed at different routes of the provincial capital to ensure checking of suspected persons and vehicles. He said 190 policemen had fallen in the line of duty this year but despite that the morale of security personnel was high and they were ready to sacrifice their lives for protection of the people. He claimed that foreign hands were involved in terrorist acts. The police chief on Saturday visited different bazaars of Peshawar and met traders and other people to apprise himself of their problems. He also visited the Lady Reading Hospital and enquired after the health of people injured in bomb blasts. The injured he met included policemen Shah Zaman, Irfan, Inayat Khan, Said Wali khan, Naeem Khan, Rahim Badshah, Tariq and Samiullah. Speaking on the occasion, he said the government had increased compensation for heirs of slain policeman from Rs1.5 million to Rs3 million. The IGP met businessmen at Qissa Khwani, Khyber Bazaar and Saddar Bazaar and asked them to continue their support to police in the fight against militants so that their nefarious designs could be foiled.
