General census in Oct/Nov
Saturday, July 19, 2008 By our correspondent Karachi Khizer Hayat Khan, Chief Census Commissioner, Pakistan, said on Friday that the next population census would be held in October/November 2008. He was speaking as chief guest at the training workshop on the Sixth Population and Housing Census of Pakistan held at Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS). He said that training workshops would be held in provincial capitals to empower the provincial employees like schoolteachers, lady health visitors, Patwaris, to achieve skills, to collect proper data for improving the quality of population census 2008. Khan said that Pakistan’s population was growing rapidly and according to the 1998 census the total population stood 144.3 million but at present it is expected to touch the 70 million mark. Besides, there are 3.5 million Afghan refugees in the country. He said that 30 per cent people lived below poverty line and earned less than $2 a day, adding that Pakistan has the lowest literacy rate among the SAARC countries and highest fertility rate in the region after Bangladesh and India. http://www.thenews.com.pk/daily_detail.asp?id=125010 |
