Zardari chairs another important meeting today
ISLAMABAD: Yet another meeting of senior leaders of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party will be held on Monday, with President Asif Ali Zardari in the chair. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will also attend it.
“The meeting will deliberate on the political situation and flood relief and rehabilitation measures being undertaken,” president’s spokesman, Farhatullah Babar, said. All MNAs and senators of the party have been asked to attend it. The meeting of the PPP parliamentary committee is significant because the Supreme Court will take up on Monday a case relating to implementation of its verdict on the National Reconciliation Ordinance. The court had asked the government to send a letter to the Swiss authorities for reinitiating money laundry cases against President Zardari. However, the law ministry sent a summary to Prime Minister Gilani which he had approved. The summary suggested that being a sitting president no case could be tried against him and the government should not send any request to the Swiss authorities for reopening cases. According to sources, the meeting would review the political situation, SC decision on the NRO and status of its beneficiaries and speculations about a ‘change’ in the government. It will also discuss relations with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and a move to unite all factions of the Pakistan Muslim League. It will be the fourth meeting of the PPP after reports that a campaign is being launched against the democratic set-up. The PPP core committee comprising close aides of President Zardari is also expected to meet to take important decisions in the light of the parliamentary committee meeting. The president and the prime minister have rubbished reports about a change in the government. |
