Islamabad: Illegal occupation of govt properties: Senate body decides stern action
Senate body decides stern action against police officials

* Recommends government not to allot more than one plot to employees
* Says plots allotment criteria needs revision

By Irfan Bukhari

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Housing and Works on Tuesday expressed displeasure over the illegal occupation of the government flats and quarters by police officials in the federal capital.

The committee, which met here with Senator Abdul Nabi Bangash in the chair, decided to take strict action against such police officials who were not vacating illegally occupied government accommodations. It also recommended that the government not allot more than one plot to any government employee.

The committee decided to summon the interior minister and secretary, inspector general of police and officials of other relevant ministries and departments in the next meeting to get vacated the illegally occupied accommodations from police officials.

Federal Minister for Housing and Works Rehmatullah Kakar told the committee that police officials were not complying with orders of the department concerned.

He said efforts were underway to launch mega housing projects in the country to provide shelter to the federal government employees.

Plot allotment: Discussing the criteria for allotment of plots to the government servants in BS 1-22, the committee pointed out the allotment criteria needed to be revised and steps should be taken to ensure transparency in this regard.

“No government employee should have more than one plot,” the committee observed. The committee called for a uniform policy for allotment of plots to the federal government employees so that every employee should have accommodation at the time of retirement.

Considering the membership drive launched by the Federal Government Employees Housing Foundation (FGEHF), the committee directed the authorities concerned to review the criteria adopted for allotment of plots in future schemes and not to neglect age and seniority.

The committee directed FGEHF to review the price mechanism adopted for payments for Bhara Kahu/Murree Expressway (apartments Phase 8), as the current prices of the apartments were much high and beyond the capacity of the low paid employees.

During the meeting, at one stage upon the request of Kakar the media representatives were asked to leave the committee room, as he wanted to share some confidential information.
