Karachi: Loopholes in River Valley Park project
The planners of the proposed River Valley Park project in Malir River are optimistic about their plan and described it as impressive and attractive.
However, the situation on ground is very different. There are Katchi Abadis on the river bed and the removal of these slums would be a difficult task. Other main problem that the planners ignored was the natural belt of the Malir River from where the rain water flows into the sea, say observers. Often in the past, Malir River has helped save Karachi during time of torrential rains but the plan developed for the River Valley Park does not mention the plan to secure the park during heavy rains in the city. The DG Parks, City District Government Karachi, Liaquat Arain sounded hopeful about the success of his River Valley Park plan and said that a concrete structure would be built in the river belt to ensure smooth flow of rain water into sea. http://www.thenews.com.pk/daily_detail.asp?id=178735 |
