PHA executing 18 different housing projects
Pakistan Housing Authority is executing 18 projects to construct around 4,500 housing units in four urban centers of Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Islamabad.According to federal Medium Term Budget Estimates for Service Delivery 2010-13 report, during 2008-09 under PWP-1 an amount of Rs. 15,09.680 million was allocated against 1306 schemes out of which 508 schemes have been completed.Similarly under PWP-II Rs. 6.190.533 was allocated for 2,070 schemes out of which 834 schemes have been completed successfully.
Approximately around 10,000 unskilled workers remained employed on various projects, besides above 500 professionals. In addition, the aforementioned projects helped revive more than 40 sick downstream industries. Construction of houses has been started in sectors G-10, G-11 and I-11 in Islamabad. Such housing project is underway in Karachi at Gulshan-e-Memar, scheme 33 and Mono Got areas, Hayatabad in Peshawar, Federal Colony of Lahore and at Chaman Highway in Quetta. About 3,000 kanals of land in Bara Kahu has been purchased, where flats and plots would be built for allotment to government employees, general public and journalists. The allotment would be on ‘no profit, no loss basis’. About two percent quota for journalists and non-journalists has been allocated in each of the federal schemes. An agreement to construct about 5250 houses and flats in Karachi would be signed with private sector within next few days. Investors are showing interest in Pakistan’s housing sector, adding that two foreign companies are interested to build about 13500 houses in Karachi alone. The government is according high priority to the development of housing sector. Development of housing sector would also boost 47 other industries linked with it. The Prime Minister’s Housing project launched last year to provide houses to low income group would also boost socio-economic activities in the country. Under the Prime Minister’s Housing for All Programme, one million housing units would be constructed throughout the country including AJK and Northern Areas, for the government servants, needy, poor, and general public at affordable cost. |
