KMC considers adopt-a-park scheme
Karachi: Due to an on-going shortage of funds, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is considering a proposal to hand all parks over to private parties for “adoption” while retaining their ownership status.
According to a news source, the proposal was discussed at a meeting convened at the Governor House chaired by Governor Dr Ishratul Abad. There are approximately 152 parks under KMC and expressions of interest for three of these will be sought first. “Initially, EOIs [will] be sought for Bagh-i-Ibne Qasim Park, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park, and Beach Avenue Park from private parties as part of a pilot project,” said Parks and Horticulture Director Asadullah Shah. “If the government receives a good response, then a decision [will] be taken to offer more parks for adoption.” According to sources, some private parties have already expressed interest. KMC has dealt with a shortage of funds for a long time because of which parks are poorly maintained. Giving parks up for “adoption” can help generate revenue for the body as well as lead to the development of recreational facilities in these areas. Reportedly, environmentalists support the move but have reservations regarding too much commercial activity and encroachment of public spaces, along with the enforcement of security measures for children. |
