Female literacy rate 42 percent, National Assembly told
ISLAMABAD: The female literacy rate in Pakistan is only 42 percent, compared with male literacy rate of 67 percent, Education Minister Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani told the National Assembly during the Question Hour on Wednesday. To another question, he said 1,593 scholarships for higher education were awarded under three ongoing indigenous scholarship programmes during 2008-09. Minister for Industries and Production Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo said said in a written reply that Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) suffered a loss of Rs 337 million from June to October 2008. To a question by MNA Riaz Fatiyana about the reason for the loss, he said that global recession had caused prices of steel products in the international markets to go down by about 50 percent, which has seriously affected prices and sales of PSM products. Sports Minister Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani said a committee had been formed to probe the poor performance of Pakistan’s hockey team in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. irfan ghauri
