NTDC established New 220KV grid station

LAHORE: National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) has established a new 220KV grid station at WAPDA Town, besides achieving an overall 85 percent work progress on another station of the same capacity on Ghazi Road that would help reduce load shedding duration in LESCO domain.

PEPCO/NTDC Managing Director Rasul Khan Mahsud said the NTDC was extending and improving the country’s power transmission system following increase in electricity generation through new and upgraded projects in line with the present democratic government’s commitment of ensuring optimum utilization of all available resources to balance the power demand and supply mechanism.

Mahsud said Rs 1.862 billion project of Wapda Town grid station entails installation of three 160MVA (Mega Volt Ampere) transformers with controlling switch-gears on both sides, four 220KV line bays and 220KV Lahore-Kot Lakhpat double circuit in/out transmission line.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded project commenced on July 1, 2008 and now the grid station was operational and would soon be inaugurated formally, he added.

He said the Wapda Town Grid Station would cater to growing demand of all categories of consumers of LESCO load centres, particularly Wapda Town and its adjoining housing societies as well as New Kot Lakhpat area.

Technically, this grid would reduce load from 220/132KV transformers at New Kot Lakhpat, Bund Road and Ravi Grid Stations especially in summer season, besides improving the system voltage profile and supply reliability, he maintained.

Mahsud said for being closer to the Indian border, it would be the foremost and nearest available grid station for pole-to-pole power import, if Pakistan reached into an agreement with India for import of electricity.

The estimated cost of the vital project being funded by KFW (a German development bank) and the Korean Bank, is Rs 2.562 billion with scope of work including construction of sub-station consisting of 220/132 KV line and three 160MVA transformers along with controlling switch-gears, construction of 220 KV double circuit transmission line for in/out of existing Kala Shah Kaku-Sarfaraz Nagar single circuit line and construction of 220KV double circuit transmission line in/out for Kala Shah Kaku-Ravi single circuit.

At present, construction of 220KV double circuit transmission line in/out of existing KSK-Ravi single circuit at Ghazi Road sub-station is in progress, the NTDC has achieved an overall 85 percent progress on this important project.

He said company had also the credit of stretching 246 kilometers long 220KV double circuit twin bundle transmission line in a very short span of time.

He said the SNC Company Canada and NESPAK has completed the feasibility report of 500KV HVDC and HVAC lines for transmission of imported 3400MW coal-based power. While, feasibility report was being prepared for transmission of 2400MW to be generated through Thar Coal deposits and its PCŠI had been forwarded to the government.

Now, the NTDC has also connected eight independent power plants of 1,725MW collective capacity in the main power system and these stations included 200MW each of Nishat Power, Nishat Chunia Power and Liberty Powers Faisalabad, and 225MW each of Atlas Power Sheikhupura, Saif Power Sahiwal, Halmor Powers Sheikhupura and Orient Powers Balloki.

Similarly, 300MW Chashma Nuclear Power Plant’s generation has been connected to main power system through 140 kilometres long 220KV transmission line.

At present there are 12 grid stations of 500KV having capacity of 14850MVA and 26 sub-station of 220KV with 15364MVA capacity, and these grids are sufficiently catering to the power needs of the country, he added. app
