Islamabad: Installation of explosive detecting scanners in capital soon
ISLAMABAD: Police plan to install nine high-tech explosive detecting scanners at the capital city’s key points. Of them, five scanners will be for the detection of explosive-laden vehicles and the remaining for suicide bombers, it’s learnt. The Interior Ministry officials said on Friday that the scanners would be imported from China and would be supplied to police shortly. They said such scanners had already been installed at the Karachi port to detect explosives in containers. The officials said the Chinese government would also provide the $ 280 million security gadgets to Pakistan to strengthen law-enforcement agencies and build their capacity. According to them, the gadgets include vehicle and cellphone scanners. They said donors had pledged to give $ 65 million for the capacity building of the police department. Inspector General Police Kaleem Imam said explosive detecting scanners would help police counter terrorism and thus, protecting the public life and property. He said police were short of manpower and facilities including transport and accommodation facilities but even then, the performance of their personnel was satisfactory. He demanded that the government provide the department with better funds so that it could provide its personnel with facilities and modern equipment. app
