CM approves 50,000 new cops for Punjab
* 15,000 personnel to be inducted in major urban centres

LAHORE: Around 50,000 new recruits will be inducted over the next five years to fill vacancies in the Punjab police, including Lahore, and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has released funds for the recruitment of 6,000 officials during the upcoming year 2010-11, sources told Daily Times on Tuesday. Additional Inspector General (Welfare & Finance) Aftab Sultan has forwarded a summary to the CM citing a shortage of police personnel in Punjab. “I sent a summary to the Punjab government, which has been approved by the CM. Funds have been issued for the recruitment of 6,000 officials during 2010-11. During the process it will also be decided if a double-shift system should be started or not,” Sultan told Daily Times. According to sources, Sultan wrote in the summary that crimes were increasing and the law and order situation was becoming a major problem. This, he writes, necessitates the recruitment of 50,000 officials, including constables, drivers, and assistant sub-inspectors. Sources added that the recruitment of 15,000 officials had been approved for five major districts of Punjab, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan and Rawalpindi, while the remaining 35,000 recruitments would be made in other districts. They said the recruitment process would be completed over at least five years. During this period, inspectors and deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) would also be promoted. Moreover, the recruitments would be carried out in phases as training institutes and other resources to train 50,000 personnel were unavailable and the Punjab government could not issue enough funds. In a conference, all regional police officers (RPOs) were informed about the approval of the summary and directed to send reports about staff shortage to the Punjab central police office (CPO) so the recruitment process could begin. farhan ali khan
