CDA Greenlights New Route Connecting Margalla Avenue to M1 Motorway - Global News PakistanIslamabad, August 11, 2023 (GNP): The federal government has approved a novel route that will establish a connection between Margalla Avenue and the M1 Motorway. Sources reveal that during a meeting of the Capital Development Authority's (CDA) Development Working Party (DWP), the project's chairman, Noor-ul-Mengal, endorsed the Rs. 5.45 billion initiative, which is slated for completion within eight months. The holistic plan incorporates the incorporation of an interchange at N5 as well. The additional 5-kilometer stretch of road will link Margalla Avenue, spanning from G.T. Road to D-12, with the newly designated segment extending from D-12 to E-11. This particular section is presently undergoing construction and is expected to conclude shortly. Moreover, the civic agency is actively preparing for the forthcoming 11th Avenue, projected to traverse from E-11 to the Srinagar Highway. This strategic initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion on Margalla Avenue and other associated thoroughfares. In a recent turn of events, a Senate committee issued a directive instructing the CDA to cease the construction of a road from Shah Allah Ditta through the Margalla Hills National Park, creating a link between the capital and Haripur. This decision transpired during the Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change meeting. Rina Saeed Khan, Chairwoman of the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB), provided insights during the meeting, pointing out the CDA's initiation of the project without conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). She further expressed concerns, alleging that the CDA's motives behind the road construction are more focused on real estate ventures than serving the interests of local communities and visitors, citing Islamabad High Court (IHC) rulings that prohibit developmental activities within conservation areas. Emphasizing the urgency of establishing clear boundaries to prevent encroachments, Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman conveyed her efforts in collaborating with relevant officials to hinder road construction across the national park.
